In May 2016 Artemis was commissioned by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to prepare a Conservation Area Appraisal for the village of Cookham in Berkshire.
Cookham is a historic village with Anglo Saxon origins. As might be expected there are many significant buildings. Its layout is distinctive, with two historic settlements linked by a causeway across the floodplain. Cookham is characterised by a large amount of open space. The Thames-side location is also important. One of the factors that makes Cookham internationally significant is the work of the artist Stanley Spencer, who featured Cookham in many of his paintings.
A large area within the Conservation Area has been the subject of ongoing development pressure. There are a large number of conservation and interest groups within the village. Our role was, not only to draft the appraisal, but also to manage public engagement with the process.
